How does alert escalation work?

Each user is assigned an 'escalation level', with level 1 meaning you get the alert notifications right away. If the alert rule does not require acknowledgement, only level 1 users will ever see the notification. However, if acknowledgement is required, the alert rule includes a repeat time. If the alert is not acknowledged within this time period, the alert is repeated, this time at level 2. Each repeat goes up one level. We suggest allowing one extra repeat per level, thus assigning users to levels 1, 3, 5, etc., makes sense.

A lot of variations are possible using combinations of acknowledge levels, user groups, and alert methods (email, SMS and Voice). You can easily implement a scheme whereby if you ignore your email, your boss gets a phone call.
